Examples of this can be seen on the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal in particular. Where the towpath changes from one side of the canal to another, a special form of bridge was designed to stop the towrope being tangled. These are known as roving, turnover or 'snake' bridges and are especially common on the Macclesfield Canal.

The canal is noted for its fine stone bridges - particularly the six change or snake bridges where the towpath changes sides of the canal. These bridges were designed to allow the horse to move over without having to untie it from the boat.

The grade II listed 'snake bridge' was designed to allow horses to move over without having to untie it from the boat. This smart piece of architecture can be found in Macclesfield. The Macclesfield Canal runs for about 27½ miles from its junction with the Peak Forest Canal at Marple, via 12 locks at Bosley, to its junction with the Trent & Mersey Canal at Kidsgrove (the original canal length to Hall Green is 26 1/4 miles).
